St John’s History

The origins of St John’s date back to 1894. By the end of the 19th century many Lutheran families had settled in Westfield. Founded in Westfield, Massachusetts in 1901 as St John’s Evangelical German-Polish Lutheran Church initially meeting in rented space with Worship services conducted in German and Polish

1910 – building completed on State Street

1914 – English service began; although not every week

1927 – minutes of the church council meetings were recorded in English

1936 – congregation unanimously voted to join the Missouri Synod

1940 – major renovation to the church adding altar rail and lectern

1944 – voted to hold German service only during Easter and Christmas

1948 – voted to discontinue German services due to low attendance

1957 – voted to change the name to St John’s Lutheran Church

1962 – property purchased on Broad Street

1964 – building completed at 60 Broad Street

1969 – new constitution adopted allowing women to vote

1984 – mortgage for new building paid off in full

2001 – celebration of 100th anniversary

2014 - celebration of 50th anniversary of building at 60 Broad Street
